File permissions aren't the issue because they don't exist in Windows.

Windows does safety checks on files downloaded from the internet, and it's very possible those safety checks are what is causing your problem. Here's how to remove those safety checks. Note that I'm using "bronx-wp.zip" for the name of the ZIP archive you downloaded; you should use the actual name.

Open Windows Explorer, go to the bronx-wp.zip file you downloaded, right-click on the filename, and select Properties. At the bottom of the dialog box is a warning message and a button that says "unblock". Click the Unblock button, then click Apply, and then click OK to close the box. Now go to the wp-content/themes directory and delete the bronx-wp folder.

You can now extract the files from the bronx-wp.zip file into the wp-content/themes folder. If the safety checks were causing your problem, then WordPress will now load properly.

Hello,

I would like to change the domain name for my WordPress account but I am completely clueless on how to do so.

I tried to change it through the settings on WordPress but learnt about that one the hard way. My current address is "http://localhost/Wordpress" and I bought a domain through names.co.uk which I'd like to use

I would really appreciate some guidance on this one as I can't find the correct info for this.

Are you asking about a local installation on your own computer or about a live WordPress site hosted somewhere?

Here is what I find while trying to understand what you have and what you might be wanting to do:
http://blog.secretslots.com/
http://www.whois.com/whois/secretslots.com

http://localhost/Wordpress would be local and not part of the above.

Hi,

Relatively new to this but.....
I tried to insert some code into the functions.php file in the editor part of WP and i got this error back on a blank screen:
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '<' in C:\xampp 1\htdocs\wp\wp-content\themes\theme\keid-hosting\functions.php on line 43

I deleted the previously inserted code on line 43 but the error still remained.
I am now completely locked out of http://localhost/wp/wp-admin/ (just shows the above error) and have tried replacing the functions.php on my c drive with the original functions.php file from my inital download but to no avail.
How do i get back into admin to rectify this file on WP. Or is that my issue??
Site not live yet! Can FTP functions.php file.

Thanks in advance,

Tom

Hi,
Yesterday I installed XAMPP on my PC (Windows 7)
-I launched XAMPP Control Panel v3.2.1 and changed Apache ports to 8080 and 4433 because Apache would not start with default ports.
-I managed to launch Apache and MySQL and I created a database (named "WP1") and a user
-I downloaded WP 4.3.1 and unzipped the files in
xampp/htdocs/wp1/wordpress (subfolder was created by mistake, but I don’t think that’s the problem)
-changed wp-config-sample to wp-config and edited DB name and user accordingly
-worked the whole time in localhost/wp1/wordpress and managed to login, dowlnoad themes, plugins, create a few pages for a new website...
-Everything worked perfectly!!!

THEN:

-Laptop battery died w/o warning (old problem I need to fix)
-After connecting computer to charger I restarted the system and accessed XAMPP Control Panel
-I started Apache and MySQL
-Everything Okay (green)

First problem:

When clicking on Mysql "Admin" Chrome (default browser) opens on localhost and it says "page not available"

Same result with http://127.0.0.1 or https://127.0.0.1

I managed to access the admin panel by entering
localhost:8080

-Everything looks okay there

-Then I tried to enter localhost:8080/wp1 and I see a directory tree that shows my wordpress folder

But then:

-If I click on the directory the browser automatically removes ":8080" after localhost
and tries to access localhost/wp1/wordress and I still get the message "page not available ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED"
-If I manually enter localhost/wp1/wordpress/wp-login.php (or wp-admin) in the address bar again I receive the same ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED error
-same with https://127.0.0.1/wp1/wordpress/wp-admin

NOW IT GETS EVEN WEIRDER:

-If I manually enter localhost:8080/wp1/wordpress/wp-login.php I get a very basic (only HTML) page with login (name of my site, username and password fields, login old-school HTML button)
-If I enter my data (username and password) using this HTML form I get again the message “This page is not available, ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED
-When I enter “localhost:8080/wp1/wordpress/wp-admin “ I see a naked (only old school HTML) version of my wordpress dashboard. If I click on the blue, underlined links (e.g. “all pages” or “themes” or “customize”….) the URL in the address bar changes but nothing appears.

The very last line on this page says “session expired please log in again” and when I click on login the whole thing starts from localhost:8080/wp1/wordpress/wp-loging.php and when I enter my login data I still get ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED

SOLUTIONS I’VE TRIED SO FAR (unsuccessfully)

-Changed Proxy Configuration, LAN in chrome (checked or unchecked different checkboxes in many configurations, tried to change port:80 to 8080….): didn’t change the situation

-Edited wp-config by changing DB_HOST to ‘localhost:8080’ instead of ‘localhost’. When I do that and try to access localhost:8080/wp1/wordpress/wp-login.php the page doesn’t load. It simply tries to load for several minutes till I stop it…

-I deactivated firewalls, antivirus programs and so on..still no success

Is there a solution to my problem or should I start everything from scratch???

It took me almost 6 hours to create the first pages and I don’t want to lose all my work :(

Thanks in advance for your help

Hi Emilyswarm,
Had similar challenges this weekend, so am following this post for other suggestions. Eventually uninstalled and reinstalled. BTW, I see that XAMPP "suggests" to download the Bitnami stacked Wordpress installation - works pretty well!
Cheers

I solved the problem by cleaning the computer I use for creating the site: I removed all programs which might interfere with standard ports (skype, firewalls, antivirus....) and set 80 and 443 as standard ports in Xampp Control Panel (default stting).
I managed to start Apache and MySQL and everything works just fine by simply accessing localhost.
Obviously, that's not the computer I use for browsing or working anymore.

HI

I am running Instant WordPress from my C: drive.

I regularly copy the entire instantWordPress directory to another location as a backup. I decided recently to update to the current WordPress which I did manually following the instructions on the WordPress site. I then had to update the database which was done automatically.

Once completed I was unable to login to my site. I have also found that I am unable to login to the copies kept elsewhere. Of course I can log in using admin and password but that only reaches the dummy site supplied with the release. I am unable to login to my own content.

Can Anyone help me to login please.
Versions:
Instant-WP-4.4.2 contains
WordPress 4.1
Apache 2.2.15
PHP 5.4.36
MySQL 5.1.46-community-nt

Many thanks
Scriptham

- The most likely issue is the webserver can't connect to the internet or is unable to connect securely. If you have error logs on the server, check them for more detailed information as to what has failed.

On a localhost (WAMP/MAMP) installation, this error can occur if the PHP curl extension is not installed or is improperly installed. You should check phpinfo to verify curl is installed, and if not, check your WAMP/MAMP documentation for installation instructions.

I agree that this is a problem. Of course, the plugin could be modified to allow any hosts, I think the developer should consider allowing any hostname, but checking the IP or have an override.

Right now I’m really stuck. I’ve successfully migrated a live wordpress site to localhost using the duplicator plugin which makes the whole process very painless. Except, I just can't get the permalinks to work. I've saved to default then resaved back to postname but it wont work, changed the name of the htaccess file in the process so a new one was created and still no joy. I get an error "the requested url was not found on this server". But default settings work fine. So I checked some previous sites that I have sitting on localhost and none of the permalinks work, so I'm guessing this is not a plugin issue. However, the one big change is that I have upgraded to yosemite quite recently.

My set up is Mac OSX Yosemite 10.10.5 with MAMP 3.0.7.3
From reading through forum posts and problems others have had with yosemite I've made a couple of changes to the system httpd.conf (as described here) by changing the AllowOverride line to read 'AllowOverride All' and uncommented 'LoadModule rewrite_module libexec/apache2/mod_rewrite.so'

I've also made a change to the MAMP httpd.conf file as explained here, to change to
'Options Indexes FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride All'
but still can't get the permalinks to work.

Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Nathalie

Hello Good People

Thanks for the feedback so far.

I also get the same error 3 times running a local MAMP server when I go Dashboard > Updates

Warning: An unexpected error occurred. Something may be wrong with WordPress.org or this server's configuration. If you continue to have problems, please try the support forums. (WordPress could not establish a secure connection to WordPress.org. Please contact your server administrator.) in /Applications/MAMP/htdocs/bbthemetest/wp/wp-includes/update.php on line 302

also on line 466 and on line 122

I'm also getting a similar error when i go Appearance > Themes > Add New and no themes are displayed.

An unexpected error occurred. Something may be wrong with WordPress.org or this server’s configuration. If you continue to have problems, please try the support forums

However occasionally the themes do display and there is no error which is very odd. Could this suggest some sort of timeout issue? I have 1.7 Mb download and 0.5 Mb upload speeds.

I am running latest MAMP PRO 3.4 on latest OSX 10.10.5 with latest versions of WordPress 4.3.1, Themes and Plugins. Running PHP 5.6.10, MySQL 5.5.42

I have checked and the curl extension is enabled and Apache has the ssl_module installed.

The php code on those lines creates a connection to the url:

https//:api.wordpress.org/themes/update-check/1.1/

If I paste the url in my browser I seem to connect ok and get

Error: No themes specified.

Have spent several hours googling and trying different stuff without any result, so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks a Lot :-)

Basil

Tara

Am very grateful for your reply - thankyou.

I followed the MyPHPadmin approach. When I use the wrong UID or the wrong PWD it tells me which is wrong. When I use the correct UID and PWD the response is

You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.

I imagine that there is a setting somewhere that needs changing, can you advise please.

Thanks.
Scriptham.

Do you have admin role?

When I use the correct UID and PWD the response is
You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.

If you have admin privileges, you may want to discuss this with your host.

WordPress is actually located on localhost. So I am having to do my own admin.

This system did work since July until yesterday when I updated WordPress so it should work again. I know from using myphpadmin that the PWD had changed in the db. Presumably other security data could have changed as well.

Any ideas?
